Our Mission
- The association’s goal is to support small-scale hydropower production, which generates added value for Finnish society (approximately 220 million € / 1 TWh) annually
- Act as a social influencer and information sharer

Definition of small-scale hydropower
According to the EU-regulated definition, small-scale hydropower encompasses micro-hydropower, mini-hydropower, and small-scale hydropower.
- Micro-hydropower has a power output under 0.1MW.
- Mini-hydropower has a power output of 0.1 -1MW
- Small-scale-hydropower has a power output of 1-10MW

About Pienvesivoimayhdistys
The Small Hydropower Association (Pienvesivoimayhdistys ry.) was founded on December 2, 1998. The purpose of the association is to support hydropower producers and service providers operating in the small hydropower sector.
The association is based in Helsinki. Currently, the association has 40 members, including companies involved in energy production and related services within the hydropower sector, as well as private individuals.
Our Way of Working
In General
The Small Hydropower Association monitors the technical and legislative developments in the industry sector and participates in the discussions surrounding the topic by attending meetings and seminars in the field.
The association contributes to the preparation of legislative work by providing opinions on draft laws related to the industry and, when invited, participating in the activities of working groups preparing draft laws. The association is involved in the board activities of the Local Energy Association (Lähienergialiitto ry), through which it gains a comprehensive view of current events and trends related to energy and can also influence small hydropower-related matters through the Local Energy Association.
With our Members
Our association has an executive director who informs the members about current issues. We strive to provide support to our members in matters related to hydropower, whether it concerns permitting or technical questions. We organize seminars related to the industry sector and, for example, opportunities for site visits to power plants.
